MT. LONGONOT DAY TRIP
Overview
The trip begins with an early morning pick-up from Nairobi at around 6:30 – 7:00 am. You will drive along the scenic Mai Mahiu–Naivasha Road with a short stop at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint, where you can take photos and enjoy panoramic views of the escarpment. You will then proceed to Mt. Longonot National Park, arriving at the park gate at approximately 8:30 am. After a short briefing from the park rangers and stretching, you will start your hike at about 9:00 am. The first section of the trail is moderate, but the path becomes steeper as you approach the crater rim. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the rim, depending on the group’s pace. At the rim, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the crater forest below and sweeping sights of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha, and Mt. Suswa. For those who wish, there is an optional 7 km walk around the crater rim, which offers fantastic scenery and opportunities for photos, birdwatching, and nature appreciation. After exploring, you will enjoy a picnic lunch either on a shaded spot along the rim or back near the base, depending on the group’s preference. Following lunch, the group will begin the descent, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. At the base, you will have time to relax, freshen up, and share experiences from the hike. The return journey to Nairobi begins at around 3:30 pm, with the option of a brief stop in Naivasha town for refreshments (such as fresh fish or ice cream) if desired. You will arrive back in Nairobi at approximately 5:30 – 6:00 pm, marking the end of a memorable adventure.
Itinerary
Day Trip: Nairobi – Mt. Longonot – Nairobi
